What is a

Tongue or Lip Tie?

Inside the mouth are small bands of tissue called “Frenums” connected to our tongues, lips and cheeks, and we are all born with them! The band of tissue that connects the bottom of the tongue to the floor of the mouth is called the lingual frenum. The band of tissue that connects the upper lip to the gums is called the labial frenum. Sometimes, these tissues can be tighter, shorter or thicker than usual, which may restrict movement or affect how the mouth functions.

This is known as a tongue tie or lip tie.

Not all ties require treatment. What matters most is whether they’re causing functional impact with things like feeding, speaking, oral-facial development, or impacting risk of cavities. That's why a thoughtful, functional assessment is so important.

The Bolton Kids Dental

Approach

We take a calm, personalized approach to care - because no two children are the same.
Our goal is to understand the full picture, not just one symptom. Whenever possible, we prefer to start with conservative, non-surgical support, often working alongside trusted professionals such as lactation consultants, speech therapists, chiropractors, osteopaths, physiotherapists, and physicians.

In many cases, the right combination of support can significantly improve function without the need for a procedure.

If functional restriction continues to impact your child’s feeding, speech, development or comfort, we’ll guide you through next steps and help you decide what’s best for your family—without pressure.

Exploring Your

Treatment Options

If a tongue or lip tie is affecting your child’s function, a simple procedure called a frenectomy may be recommended.

A frenectomy releases the tethered tissue, allowing for better movement with less restriction of the tongue or lips.

We use a soft-tissue laser to make the procedure:
