Why are baby teeth important?

Even though baby teeth due eventually fall out, it is still important to take care of them. Front baby teeth (incisors) fall out first, typically between ages of 6-8; however back baby teeth (molars) typically do not fall out until age 12. Cavities occur more frequently and progress quicker in baby teeth compared to adult teeth; this is due to thinner/weaker enamel and challenges in managing diet and oral hygiene in young children. Untreated cavities will continue to get bigger and will lead to pain and infection. Dental infections can be very serious and put your child at risk of ending up in the emergency room. Early loss of a baby molar from extensive decay can lead to drifting of neighbouring teeth into the open space. This drifting of teeth can lead to inadequate space for future adult teeth and create more complex orthodontic complications.
